For many years we lived next door to Kent and Sheila, who were antique dealers, which meant lots of possible props for my work. I like the patterns in Kilim rugs, and I borrowed this beautiful one for the background of this floral piece. Since most of my very early paintings were florals, my husband Charles' comment was, "Not another vase of flowers!" I like the ordered patterns of the rug against the random chaos of the flowers.

I had to figure out how to make the texture of the rug without painting every knot, suggesting the warp and woof and letting the viewer's eye fill in the blanks. A crystal ball appears in many of my works. It turns the world upside down and focuses light, so is a great compositional element.
